PNG shines for crisp transparency or simple graphics. The cost is weight: UI captures, mocks, and photos exported as PNG often inflate critical CSS and page weight. WebP with alpha is a solid trade-off for banners, complex icons, and cut-out photos.

WebP supports transparency. By default, with WebP or PNG output, transparency is kept (“Keep transparency”). If the file will sit on an opaque canvas or PDF, filling with white or brand color can avoid odd edges in tools that ignore alpha.
If you later pick JPG as output, alpha does not exist—fill is required (white by default). This landing preselects WebP to match “PNG to WebP” intent, without locking you out of other formats.
Export PNG at final resolution or set max width here before encoding. A 4000 px PNG becomes a heavy WebP if you never resize. For online stores, 1200–1600 px WebP often suffices on desktop with srcset.
Check anti-aliased edges on light and dark backgrounds. If you remove the background, wait for the local model to finish and verify the cutout before publishing. The whole process stays on your machine.

Lossy WebP trades some fidelity for size. Raise quality if you see artifacts on text or gradients.
