How to Optimize Images for SEO

Google doesn't "see" a photo the way you do — it doesn't automatically recognize what's in the image or why it's relevant to the page. It reads it through a handful of very specific signals: the file name, the alt text, the file size, the format, and the surrounding text context. Most websites cover one or two of those signals and leave the rest untouched — which is exactly where the easiest gains are to be found.
Image weight is a direct ranking signal
Since 2021, Google has used Core Web Vitals as a ranking factor — and one of those metrics, LCP (Largest Contentful Paint), measures how long it takes for the largest visual element on the page to render, which on the vast majority of sites is an image. A heavy, unoptimized image doesn't just make the page feel slower — it directly worsens a metric Google uses to decide how to rank that page against others that do load fast. That's the technical reason why "compress your images well" isn't just a good design practice — it's real, measurable SEO.
The file name matters more than it seems
A file named IMG_4821.jpg tells a search engine nothing about what's in the image. A file named blue-running-shoes-nike.jpg does — it's an extra, free context signal that many websites simply ignore because they upload the photo exactly as it comes out of the camera or the phone. Renaming the file before uploading it, using descriptive words separated by hyphens, in lowercase and without special characters, is a thirty-second step that Google actually reads.
Alt text isn't just for accessibility
The alt attribute was created to describe the image to people using screen readers — and that's still its primary purpose, one that shouldn't get lost. But as a side effect, it's also the text Google uses to understand what's in the image when it can't "see" it with certainty — and it's what determines whether your photo can show up in Google Images, a traffic source almost nobody optimizes on purpose. A good alt text describes the image naturally and specifically, without forcing keywords that don't actually describe what's shown.
Format and weight: the technical part that can be automated

The quick checklist
- A descriptive file name, in lowercase, with hyphens — not the name the camera gave it.
